Anglers targeting dolphin are to vie for more than $30,000 in guaranteed cash, prizes and trophies Friday through Sunday, June 20-22, during the 19th annual Key West Gator Club Dolphin Derby. Based at King's Pointe Marina, 5950 Peninsula Ave., the tournament is timed to coincide with the height of dolphin season in area waters.
Each angler is allowed to enter one qualifying fish on each of the derby's two fishing days.
A cash prize of $5,000 awaits the boat team with the heaviest combined weight of both dolphin, while prizes of $2,500 and $1,000 go to the second- and third-place teams.
Individual anglers can compete for trophies, prizes and cash valued at more than $20,000 in the dolphin challenge's divisions for male, female and junior anglers. The tournament kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, June 20, at King's Pointe, with registration closing at 7:30 p.m. and a rules meeting to follow. Dinner from the Sailfish Club at King's Pointe is scheduled as well.
Lines are to be in the water from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22. Weigh-ins are scheduled at King's Pointe until 5:30 p.m. both days.
Tournament social events include a Saturday night dinner at King's Pointe provided by Outback Steakhouse. A Sunday night cocktail party with a cash bar, full buffet dinner and awards ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Grand Key Resort, 3990 N. Roosevelt Blvd.
Proceeds from the tournament are to benefit Gator Club scholarship funds for local students attending the University of Florida.
Tournament entry fees are $150 per person for adults and $75 per person for junior anglers (under age 14).
