Scoring five "touchdowns" in the world of angling, Miami Dolphins quarterback John Beck of Weston, Fla., caught and released five tarpon to earn the title of grand champion celebrity angler in the Hawk's Cay Sunrise/Sunset Tarpon Tournament that ended April 27.
"Everyone wants to know what it's like to make a touchdown and how exciting it is," said Beck after his victory. "I can say it's that fun to have a tarpon splashing around."
"One of John's fish jumped completely over the bow -- it was eye level with my head and three feet from my face," said Captain Rich Tudor of Islamorada.
Tudor guided Beck and David Zeuske of Ponte Vedra, Fla., to win the grand champion team and angler awards, respectively.
Zeuske, who caught his first tarpon in this tournament, released a total of five.
"These guys who haven't done a lot fishing each had five bites and they landed all five, which is almost unheard of," Tudor said of Beck and Zeuske.
Runner-up was angler Len Petraska of Duck Key with two tarpon. He fished with Captain John "Coach" Demuth of Marathon, Fla.
Wade Boggs, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, served as the celebrity host for the event.
The tournament attracted 10 teams, which released 21 tarpon -- all measuring longer than 4 feet. The event is part of the Redbone at Large celebrity tournament series that raises funds to "catch the cure" for cystic fibrosis. |
