Greg Smith of Canyon, Texas, caught one permit on fly to win the 2008 Del Brown Invitational Permit Tournament honoring the late angling legend.
Smith earned the title of Grand Champion Angler fishing with Captain Scott Collins of Marathon, Fla. Collins was named the tournament's Grand Champion Guide. Collins also won the Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament, the Hawley Tarpon Tournament and the Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament this year
Smith's permit was 26.125 inches. Smith's permit was also the tournament's largest permit.
Jack Noll, of Montauk, NY caught a 25.5 inch permit to earn the title of Runner-up Grand Champion. He was guided by Captain Jeffrey Cardenas of Key West, Fla.
Chase Wise of Boca Grande, FL., was named the First Runner-up Angler with a 19.25 inch permit. He fished with Captain Bryan Holeman of Key West, FL.
Windy weather conditions made the permit fly fishing next to impossible! Anglers on 17 boats caught a tournament low record of 3 permit during the event named for Brown. The internationally acclaimed angler, who died in 2003, caught more than 500 permit during his lifetime. The dates for next year are July 21 – 24.
