While the new Orvis Access reels might look like the proven and popular Battenkill mid-arbor reel, they are quite different when it comes to functionality. The Access line has a stacked, sealed drag system, allowing maintenance-free operation. Inside, the carbon-to-stainless-steel washers are larger than Battenkill’s, resulting in a drag system that’s faster and smoother, which means more control over fast-running fish. Tweaks also make the Access much lighter than the Battenkill, and the new reels balance perfectly on today’s lightweight rods. Access reels are available in five sizes and are a great match for lines ranging from 1-weight all the way up to 12-weight. MSRP starts at $129. www.orvis.com
