Give Braid the Slip
by Lefty Kreh

Q: How do I attach braided backing line to the reel spool so it doesn’t slip?

A: The easiest method I’ve found is to cut a section of duct tape exactly the width of the spool shaft and make one wrap around the shaft. Attach the backing with a secure uni knot. However, some claim this leaves a sticky mess or eventually salt deposits on the shaft. A method that avoids using tape is to make six or eight turns around the shaft in the opposite direction from how the spool turns when giving line to an escaping fish. Finish by making a six-turn uni knot, making sure it is drawn tightly against the shaft.
