Q: “I’m planning to go to the Ambergris Caye area of Belize with my family next year. I will definitely use a guide for most of my fishing but was wondering if this area offers opportunities for wading on my own.”
—Edward Jacoby
A: I have fished several times at El Pescador lodge, but always from a boat. The ocean side of Ambergris has mostly a hard sand or marl bottom. There may be bonefish on it, but if the breeze is up, it may be too rough for fishing. I suggest e-mailing the lodge and asking if there are any do-it-yourself options.
Ambergris is a good do it yourself destination in as much as you dont have to stay at a fish camp. There are lots of good hotels with prices ranging from reasonable to expensive but still a lot less than the average $4 or 5 thousand a week for a fish camp.
Do yourself a favour and forget about looking around and wading you can catch fish but from my experience "GET A GUIDE"
One of the best is George Bradley but there are plenty of good ones to choose from and their daily rate is not to expensive.
Lots of opportunity for wading north of San Pedro. Check with the local fly shop in San Pedro. You can take the lagoon road north by bike or rent a golf cart. You can even get the water taxito drop yp off and yu can fish back. If the wind is down the fishing can be pretty good
I've fished Ambergris Caye from shore extensively over the last 7 years. If you don't mind blind casting, there are ample places to fish holes in the turle grass and off some piers to catch bonefish. Many of the holes in the turtle grass are close to shore, your backcasts may hook a passerby so be careful. Depending on the time of year, it can be quite windy, double hauling is a must.
South of Victoria House about a 100 or so yards, there is a good flat to wade. I stayed for a week and caught bonefish all week... Walk down the beach early in the morning and fish the sunrise, it will be relatively calm and won't cost you anything but an hour or two. Enjoy!
